M. A. in English (Applied Linguistics and ELT)
The Department of English offers a two- semester (1 Year) specialized MA Programme which comprises of Applied Linguistics and ELT (LE) and Literature and Theory (LT). In this programme of studies, emphasis is given on individual authors, texts, areas and genes as well as researches on varied aspects related to the items included in the courses. There is scope for students to work in a particular field and write on selected topics. Unless otherwise mentioned, the texts should be read in original English or in English translation (from other languages).The MA programme is constituted of three parts – A. Core Courses and Open courses, B. Concentration and C. Thesis Group.
A. Core Courses and Open Courses: Students will get three (3) core courses in each semester for both of the concentrations (Applied Linguistics and ELT; Literature and Theory). Each course will carry 3 credits. Similarly, they will have to choose two (2) open courses in each semester. (Please see tables A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9 and A10for clarification).
B. Concentration: The name of the programme will be MA in English. But there will be two (2) concentrations, and that will be mentioned in the parenthesis as:
i. MA in English (Applied Linguistics and ELT)
ii. MA in English (Literature and Theory)
C. Thesis Group: The aster of Arts (MA) programme has two groups: Thesis Group and Non-Thesis Group. The Thesis Group shall take 6 compulsory coursesand 3 open courses (in two semesters) along with the Dissertation whereas the Course Group shall take 6 compulsory coursesand 4open courses (in two semesters). It should be noted that the student securing at least CGPA 3.25 in the BA (Hons.) examination will be eligible to opt for the Thesis Group. The students of both the groups shall take a viva-voce after the end of the written examination.
