Objective of the Programme

The objective of the M.Phil. programme in Mass Communication and Journalism is to provide an insightful orientation of the discipline from diverse backgrounds and to build research skills. The curriculum is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the discipline and to develop their capacity for conducting advanced research in the field.

 

Duration of the Programme

The duration of the programme is two academic years as outlined below:

First Year                : Course Work

Second Year            : Thesis

 

Credit Points

The total credit points of the M.Phil. programme is 30 as mentioned below:

 

  1. Common courses: 8 Credits (1st Year)
  2. Specialized course: 4 Credits (1st Year)
  3. Viva-voce: 2 Credits (1st Year)
  4. Thesis: 16 Credits including an Oral Defense for the thesis (2nd Year)

 

  1. The M.Phil. students will have to take two compulsory courses and any one of the specialized courses each of which will contain 100 marks with 4 credits where 60 marks is for written examination and the remaining 40 marks is kept for continuous assessment. After completion of one year of course-work, the students will have to sit for the written and oral examinations.

 

  1. In the second year of the MPhil program, students are required to take thesis. The thesis is worth 12 credits and carries a total of 300 full marks. Additionally, students must complete an oral defense of their thesis, which is worth 4 credits and carries a total of 100 marks. The total credit requirement for this year is 16. The thesis will be conducted under the supervision of a senior teacher of the department as approved by the Academic Committee of the department.
